  • Note important deadlines

Learn about our application deadlines and when you can expect to hear from us.

  • Review admission standards

Admission to IU Bloomington is selective, and we consider factors that emphasize academic performance and preparation. Review the information in this section to understand IU’s admission standards.

  • Explore admission pathways

There are a few ways you could start your academic journey at IU Bloomington, including direct admission, Indiana College Core, Transfer Single Articulation Pathways, and guaranteed admission. Learn more about the different ways to start at IU.

  • Transferring credits

Use our Credit Transfer Service to explore how courses you've taken at other colleges might transfer to IU. If you are admitted, we will evaluate your transcript(s) and provide a transfer credit report outlining which of your courses translate to IU credit.

  • Review credit guides

IU awards AP and college credit that can help you get a head start on your degree program. Review advanced placement, credit, and exemptions.

  • Learn about test-optional admissions

IU's test-optional admissions policy allows you to choose whether to have your SAT and/or ACT test scores considered as part of your application review—letting you decide how best to tell your academic story.

  • Research majors

Before you apply, make sure you spend some time exploring our different schools and 200+ majors.

  • Learn about exploratory programs

IU students who have not yet chosen a major are considered exploratory students. Indiana University promotes academic exploration and encourages students to spend time discovering the path that’s right for them.

  • Review college costs

Review cost information, financial aid and funding options, and learn how to be considered for the most scholarships at IU and in your community.

Complete your application

Once you've reviewed all of the information you need to know before you apply, it's time to submit your application! Start by selecting the Apply IU Application or Common Application, then complete the steps in this section.
  • Complete the application essay

As part of your application, regardless of which platform you choose, you will need to submit an essay. If you are applying through the Common Application, you will need to submit one of the essay prompts. If you are applying through Apply IU, you will need to submit the IU-specific essay. Find more information on the IU-specific essay on our FAQ page.

  • Send your transcripts

We require an official transcript from each college or university you have attended. If you have completed fewer than 26 transferable semester hours (or 39 quarter hours) of college coursework, we will review your high school transcript as part of the admissions process.

  • Complete direct admission steps (optional)

If your program offers direct admission and requires additional admission steps (like auditions) or academic criteria, you may need to provide that along with your completed application. Review our page on admission paths to learn if your program requires additional steps.

  • Pay the application fee or request a waiver

When you submit your application, you must pay a $65 nonrefundable application fee. Your application will not be processed and we will not make an admission decision until we receive a completed waiver or the application fee.

  • Double check your browser settings

Make sure you allow pop-ups and enable third-party cookies to ensure that your application and fee payment will be submitted correctly. If you experience any payment issues, please contact us at admsbus@iu.edu or 812-855-0661. In the processing of your application, any required information that is missing will be added to your Checklist in your IU Portal as a required item.
